As of Sunday afternoon, roughly 4,300 people had taken part in an online letter-writing campaign aimed at pressuring Ottawa into allowing this province to keep 100 percent of its share of offshore oil revenues.

Kevin McCann, creator of www.faridealfornewfoundland.com, said the campaign was on target to reach 5,000 letters by today.

McCann, who lives in Washington, D.C., launched the web site Dec. 27, while visiting family in St. John's.

Visitors to the site can forward a generic letter to both Prime Minister Paul Martin and Finance Minister Ralph Goodale, calling on the federal government to "keep your promise" and let us justly keep 100 percent of our offshore oil revenues."

Roughly 68 percent of those who have taken part in the campaign reside in this province.

McCann is pleased with the response, especially since the campaign launched in the middle of Christmas holidays.

He is urging supporters of the campaign to spread the word and generate thousands more letters in the coming days.

"We need to remind our elected officials that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are watching this issue and we won't back down. We need to hold Martin accountable to his promise," he added.
